What Is Community Asset Mapping?

Community asset mapping identifies the people, organizations, institutions, relationships, and resources that help a community thrive. Instead of beginning only with problems, it starts by asking: What is already strong? Who is already serving? Where is meaningful work already happening?

At Unite KC, we use a process developed by City Leaders Collective called Community Exegesis. This approach helps us recognize where God is already at work, understand the character of a place, and build on the wisdom and strengths already present.

Community asset mapping helps us:

See where good work is already happening
Recognize trusted local leaders and organizations
Identify gaps, overlaps, and opportunities
Connect partners around shared priorities
Steward time, relationships, and resources more effectively

Understand Kansas City at a Local Level

A citywide view can hide important differences between communities. A regional view brings local strengths, needs, relationships, and opportunities into focus.

Unite KC organizes the metro into five regions:

Region One: North of the River
Region Two: Kansas City, Missouri
Region Three: Southeast Kansas City
Region Four: Johnson County
Region Five: Wyandotte County

Each region has its own identity and local wisdom. Understanding those differences helps churches, nonprofits, businesses, schools, civic leaders, and neighbors form partnerships that fit the people and places they serve.

Flourishing is more than economic growth. It means people experience belonging and opportunity; families and relationships are strengthened; institutions serve their communities well; and neighbors work together across differences.
